The Head of the Schuylkill Regatta is dubbed as “America’s Favorite Race” and for good reason. The regatta has taken place every year since the 1970’s and has grown to host hundreds of crews. Thousands of athletes flock to Philadelphia and take part in sweeping and sculling events. Categories include elite, masters, collegiate, high school, adaptive and novice crews. This year, over 30,000 spectators gathered to watch the 2.5-mile long race.

Row New York’s races took place on Sunday and although it was cold, rainy and muddy, Row New Yorkers had a ton of fun! Row New York raced 16 boats in seven categories of eights and fours. Our student-athletes came prepared to showcase the work they’ve done this fall. There was an atmosphere of camaraderie as the athletes from the Manhattan, Queens, and Brooklyn teams cheered each other on. The teams hung out on the banks of the Schuylkill, walked along the trail next to the race course, and ate some delicious hot food from the grill. The Head of the Schuylkill is not only “America’s favorite race” but also a favorite for many Row New Yorkers.

Words from the coaches

The Brooklyn boats raced as novices over the summer and made the leap to racing as the varsity boat this season. After competing at this fast race, the boats got to know their competitors and know the challenges they have to improve upon. The crews are well prepared to work hard and make the changes necessary to get to the next level in the winter and spring.

Patrick Fernbach, Brooklyn Youth Program Manager

The RNY Manhattan Novice team fielded a Boy’s Novice 8 at this past weekend’s Head of the Schuylkill Regatta in Philadelphia. Our boys finished in the top half of the field of 59 crews with a time of 16:30.2 ! This was a great showing from our team and I’m excited to see where this group of novices can achieve this winter and spring!
