Row New York visited the NYC Food Bank in observance of Dr.  Martin Luther King Jr. day- also known as a National Day of Service.

“Everybody can be great…because anybody can serve. You don’t have to have a college degree to serve. You don’t have to make your subject and verb agree to serve. You only need a heart full of grace. A soul generated by love.”

― Martin Luther King Jr.

Row New York student-athletes from all three boathouses gathered to serve on their day off. Students traveled to the Food Bank’s warehouse in Hunts Point in the Bronx. Although the temperature was frigid, the student-athletes were full of warmth, smiles, and enthusiasm.

For the first project, Row New Yorkers packed food for an event that benefited federal workers during the government shutdown. Food packed in bulk was broken down into individually sized bags. The lessons our athletes have learned from rowing immediately became evident in the way the students worked together. The student-athletes divided the different tasks amongst each other, communicated constantly and worked as quickly and efficiently as possible. Best of all, they were all having a great time with their teammates.

For the next task, our youth sorted food and other donations into categorized boxes. Those boxes were then sent to different food pantries and soup kitchens throughout the city. Again, the students impressed with their willingness to jog between stations, pick up trash and help with whatever was needed.

We want to give a huge thank you to Food Bank NYC for their hospitality (and for lunch!)
