Row New York’s learn-to-row summer camp is the ultimate opportunity to spend summer outdoors, make friends, and try something new!

Designed for beginners, our camp provides a welcoming introduction to rowing, while experienced rowers can refine their skills and gain extra time on the water.

Campers will learn the fundamentals of sculling—a rowing style using two oars—both on and off the water. They’ll start on rowing machines (ergometers) to build a strong foundation in technique, equipment basics, and on-water safety. Then, they’ll quickly transition to the water, where coaches will lead fun drills and short training sessions to develop confidence and skill. By the end of camp, rowers will be ready to participate in a friendly scrimmage with their fellow campers.

Each session includes land training and stretching to support overall fitness. No prior athletic or swimming experience is required—just a willingness to take on new challenges and a curiosity to learn something new!

Participants with an annual household income below $100,000 row for free.

FAQs

When does summer camp take place?

Camp runs Monday to Friday, from 9:00-11:00 am for Middle School students (rising 7th and 8th graders), and 11:30 am–1:30 pm for High School students (rising 9th to 11th graders). Queens summer camps run for one week each, with the option to sign up for two-week sessions, and Manhattan summer camps run for two weeks each.

How much does camp cost?

Sessions are $510 each for Queens and $980 each for Manhattan. Camp fees must be paid in full at the time of registration. Campers at the Queens location are welcome to sign up for two-week sessions, the cost of which is $980.

Participants with an annual household income below $100,000 are eligible to row for free. There is a $50 deposit for all $0 tuition participants, which will hold their place in camp. This fee will be refunded upon the full completion of camp, minus a credit card authorization fee if paying by credit card.

Please refer to our refund policy for further information.

Why should I row?

Rowing is fun, challenging, and the ultimate group effort in athletics. Campers will learn new movements and techniques, then work to do them in perfect sync with their teammates. As a result, they’ll row with peers with whom they can work hard and have fun.

Rowing is a full-body sport that uses the legs, arms, and core to complete each stroke. Participants are challenged to focus their effort on performing this motion more gracefully and powerfully each day. In addition to the many physical and mental benefits of rowing, it allows you to spend time outdoors on the water, and provides a great diversion from city life. Did we mention you’ll have fun and meet new people? There are many great reasons to row with us!

Are there any prerequisites to camp?

Yes! All participants must have completed the required registration forms and paid any required fees prior to the first day of camp in order to participate. Once a registration form is received, an email will be sent to parents/guardians with instructions for completing a USRowing registration and USRowing waiver form. Row New York is a member of USRowing and must comply with its registration processes. USRowing membership fees are included in camp fees and are paid by Row New York.

What should I bring to summer camp?

Please wear non-baggy athletic clothing and sneakers. All rowers should bring extra socks, flip flops (optional), sunscreen, a brimmed hat and/or sunglasses, a layer for the rain or chilly weather, a water bottle, and a snack. Lunch is not provided. Be sure to have breakfast and stay hydrated. You may get wet on the water, so bring a dry change of clothing.

Under what circumstances will camp be canceled?

We will row when it rains, but we will not row in strong winds, lightning, or thunder. If we cannot row, we may still practice on land. We will cancel camp on days with high heat indexes to ensure safety for all. Coaches will notify families of campers of cancellations by text and email the night before by 9 pm. Please contact your camper’s coach if you are unsure whether camp is cancelled. If no activities are held on a scheduled day of camp due to a weather cancellation, a pro-rata refund for the missed session will be offered upon completion of the camp.

Is rowing safe?

Yes! Safety is a top priority at Row New York. We want all of our participants to feel safe and comfortable in and out of the water, and we strive to provide an environment that allows everyone to perform at their best. We achieve this by following extensive land and water safety procedures, and employing highly trained rowing coaches. Additionally, all coaches and staff must have completed CPR and First Aid training.

I can't swim, can I row?

Yes! All participants will wear a lap-belt Personal Flotation Device* while they are on the water. It is very rare for rowers to end up in the water. If a rower ends up in the water, their coaches are right there with life preservers and other safety equipment. A coaching launch—an engine-operated boat from which the coach trains rowers—will accompany every rowing shell (boat). If you have concerns or the participant is uncomfortable in the water, please reach out to the camp coach, and we will make a plan specific to their needs.

*Participants may be exempted from wearing a PFD if they can show proof of a recent (within one year) swim test certified by a lifeguard.

Can I sign up for multiple camps?

Yes, participants may sign up for multiple camps. The program will be the same for each camp, but campers attending multiple camps will benefit from taking on a leadership role since they will have more experience. Plus, there is always more to learn!
