About Us

Row New York is a unique sports-based non-profit organization founded on the premise that the discipline and teamwork that rowing instills, when combined with rigorous academic support, has the power to change lives. At full capacity, our Youth Program serves over 250 high school student-athletes from diverse cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds. It is a high dosage, year-round rowing and academic program with a goal of ensuring that 100% of our young people graduate high school and matriculate to college or begin an alternative post-secondary plan. In addition, we offer rowing to New Yorkers of all ages who are either people with physical or cognitive disabilities, military veterans, or local community members. Lastly, Row New York offers summer camps and a fee-for-service rowing program for New York City independent high schools. Our programs are offered at two rowing sites: Upper Manhattan and Flushing Meadows Corona Park.

Row New York requires all staff to have received the 2023-2024 COVID-19 vaccine, except as required by law.

 

Position Summary

The Manhattan Operations Assistant works closely with the Facilities & Operations Manager to maintain our rowing site in Inwood, Upper Manhattan. The Assistant is in charge of the daily maintenance needs of the site (including dock cleaning and grounds maintenance), keeping all equipment and boats operational, and ensuring that RNY’s safety standards are followed during daily rowing practice. The Manhattan Operations Assistant will be in regular communication with the Facilities & Operations Manager and the site coaching staff to ensure that program needs and safety standards are met. Rowing experience is preferred but not required for this position. The ideal candidate has experience at a rowing or marine facility.

 

Schedule

The candidate hired for the role would start in approximately mid-March with onboarding and training. The schedule for this position varies depending on the season. The anticipated schedule is as follows:

  • Mid-March through June 2024:
      • Monday – Friday from 3:30 PM – 7:30 PM 
      • Saturday from 7:00 AM – 12:00 PM
  • July 2024:
      • Monday – Friday from 6:30 AM – 1:00 PM (approximate)
  • Late August 2024:
      • Monday – Friday from 6:30 AM – 11:30 AM
  • Fall 2024:
      • Monday – Friday from 3:00 PM – 7:00 PM
      • Saturday from 7:00 AM – 12:00 PM
  • Winter 2024/25:
      • Monday – Friday from 9:00 AM – 1:00 PM  

Must have availability for weather-dependent site visits and occasional events as needed.

 

Responsibilities

  • Ensure the site and equipment are ready before each practice; provide operational support for coaching staff during practices/events as necessary
  • Act as the primary safety officer for the site by:
      • Monitoring weather and rowing conditions before and during events/practices 
      • Assisting with shell launching and docking
      • Attending to on-water emergencies with the safety launch if necessary
      • Reporting any safety and security incidents in a timely manner
  • Check that all equipment is safe and operational; schedule or perform minor repairs as needed
  • Maintain outboard engines, set up coaching launches, and ensure they are ready for practice/events
  • Ensure equipment is cleaned and properly stored after use and the site is secure before leaving
  • Manage the upkeep of the site including grounds maintenance and dock cleaning; manage snow removal during the winter months
  • Purchase gas and run other facilities related errands as needed
  • Assist Facilities & Operations Manager and coaching staff in promoting a culture of safety in all aspects of the program

 

Qualifications

  • At least one year of work experience in a service, facilities or maintenance role; experience at a rowing club or marine organization a plus
  • Must be able to lift at least 40 pounds and perform physical work requiring lifting, bending, stooping and walking up and down stairs, both indoors and outdoors in all weather
  • Clean driving record and a valid New York State driver’s license required
  • Ability to swim and is comfortable around water
  • Launch driving experience and NYS safe boating license preferred
  • Initiative and ability to work individually without supervision and collaboratively with the program team
  • Professional demeanor and customer service oriented attitude
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively in written and oral communication
  • Experience working with and/or around youth a plus

 

Pay/Benefits

The pay rate for this position starts at $25 per hour. Part-time staff are eligible for paid sick time, holiday pay for those working at least 18 hours per week, pre-tax transit benefits, and a 401K account.
