This fall, Row New York youth athletes put in some serious work. Besides their usual practices, tutoring sessions, and college prep, our athletes erged daily, completing hard pieces weekly and sometimes by moonlight. The result of all their hard work was evident: after the last piece of fall training, nearly all of our athletes broke personal records.

Varsity Rowing

Many, many new personal records

Varsity athletes started their fall training this August. They trained on the water five days a week and had weekly tutoring sessions. Juniors have several weeks of SAT prep and seniors meet with the college prep team to work on their applications. Athletes who choose to have a mentor meet with them monthly.

After a very busy season, we’re proud to say that every one of our varsity athletes improved their speed and consistency on their Friday pieces compared to those from earlier this season.  Some of the athletes even went faster during their 20-minute piece than they did for their 2k last winter! It’s an awesome step up in ability, in strength, and most importantly, in confidence for our rowers.

Novice Rowing

Recruiting was in full swing the entire season and is continuing through the winter. Coaches visit schools to encourage high schoolers to attend practices during our Open House weeks. High schoolers come to our boathouse and give rowing a try for a week or two and decide if they want to join. We’re incredibly excited to welcome new rowers to the team! Our new rowers are learning to scull before sweeping. It’s been incredible to watch them move an octuple in sync.

Intermediate Rowing

This fall, we are piloting an intermediate squad for youth athletes who are not able to make our six-day per week commitment. We’re glad our teammates no longer have to quit the team if they need more time for school, family life, or other responsibilities. Intermediate rowers also made solid progress as athletes this fall!

Racing

We’re back on the racecourse! One Saturday at the end of the season, we scrimmaged against Rockland Rowing in Rockland, New York. The following weekend, our Queens and Manhattan teams scrimmaged on Meadow Lake. We’re excited to continue our training plans and keep improving before spring racing.

Touring Dominican College

During our scrimmage in Rockland, New York, we were lucky enough to also tour Dominican College in person. It was lovely to be back on a college campus since the start of the pandemic.

(We did tour many colleges remotely but there’s nothing quite like an in-person campus visit.)

The Dominican College Rowing Coach gave us a warm welcome and showed us what rowing at the collegiate level could be like. Some of our athletes are looking forward to applying to Dominican College!

College Acceptances

We are ecstatic to share that our seniors are starting to receive college acceptances! So far, they’ve gotten acceptances from Long Island University, University of Kansas, University of Minnesota, University of Georgia Honors College, Vanderbilt University, SUNY Purchase, SUNY University at Albany, and Stony Brook University.

Adaptive and Community Rowing

We’d like to give a warm welcome to our new Adaptive and Community Rowing Coach, Joe Wainwright! Coach Joe and the programming team are working hard to reinvigorate our Adaptive and Veterans programs after a hiatus this fall. In the next few weeks, we’re hosting a town hall with adaptive participants and parents. We look forward to using their feedback to plan for upcoming programming.
