On Wednesday, our October Speaker Series commenced with a visit from Joy Nix, the Para-Rowing Talent Identification Manager at USRowing. With her Bernese Mountain dog in the passenger seat and a single shell strapped to the roof, Joy is embarking on a cross-country journey with an important mission: to spread the word about adaptive and para-rowing. Joy is reaching out to new and developing programs to answer questions about recruiting, equipment, and community support. Row New York was lucky enough to be a stop on her “Sabbatical Road Trip”.

Row New York celebrated the achievements of our para-rowers at the Fall Benefit last week. With our competitive, recreational, and school day programs growing steadily, we are reaching more New Yorkers with disabilities than ever! Joy’s advice will be essential as we strive to make our adaptive programming even more accessible, effective, and engaging.

Ultimately, Joy hopes to clarify the classification system in para-rowing so that the path to competing on the national team is easy to navigate. Who knows – maybe we’ll see a Row New Yorker on the podium at Worlds one day!

To follow Joy’s road trip across the US, check out @boatfullofjoy on Instagram and Twitter, or read her blog.

If you are interested in participating in our para-rowing program as an athlete or volunteer, please contact Jennie Trayes at  or call 718-433-3075.

A huge thanks goes out to Joy and Bundle who shared their wealth of para-rowing knowledge with Row New York!
