Why rowing?

More than any other sport, rowing instills a sense of teamwork and discipline––it is the ultimate team sport. Unlike ball sports, there are no superstars—just a crew of eight rowers working together to move the boat forward. Many of our first-time rowers initially become interested in rowing precisely because working in sync with seven teammates mitigates the stress of performing individually. Kids who may not consider themselves coordinated or competitively driven discover their inner strength, gain confidence, and become athletes. Rowing’s gracefulness belies a challenging sport that requires grit, determination, and endurance.

Our middle schoolers become rowers through athletic training in a supportive and challenging environment. Instruction takes place primarily on indoor rowing machines and training barges. Rowing and athletic conditioning results in improved health, fitness, and a strong sense of community. This progress is a result of discipline and hard work and builds confidence in participants that transfers to academic success.
