Why rowing?
At Row New York, we wholeheartedly support youth in sports—any sport. In addition to offering health and academic benefits, sports also build character.
Rowing, however, is unique for several reasons. Rowing is the ultimate team sport! In our sport, there are no superstars. In fact, rowers must move in perfect synchrony with their teammates. The sport will build mental and physical strength, fitness, confidence, grit, and a love for competition.
We build customized programs for your school
To introduce students to the prestigious sport of rowing, schools work with Row New York to build an on-water program at one of our three locations (Manhattan, Queens, or Brooklyn), an indoor program at your school, or a mix of both. We work with each partner school to fit specific timetables and budgets.
- We start with an introductory program and build exposure
- Indoor programs have the ability to grow and move to our on-water programs
- On-water programs compete across the Northeast and represent your school
- Our programs are turn-key: we provide certified coaches, equipment, and insurance
Current schools in Row New York’s Scholastic Rowing League include Hewitt School, Poly Prep Country Day School, Riverdale Country School, and Avenues: The World School.
We row to win
While our goal is to teach a sport that encourages teamwork and builds confidence, we also foster a competitive spirit. Our teams have medaled the past 10 years in regional regattas. This success builds confidence and a sense of pride that transfers into academics as well as life in general.
The link between rowing and college
One-hundred and fifty-two colleges, including 88 D-1 schools, sponsored varsity rowing teams in 2017.
For women, due to Title IX, there are numerous scholarships available for athletes who decide to fully commit to the sport. And because women’s rowing is an equivalency sport, partial scholarships can be awarded in any proportion to meet the limit per school.
Joining forces with Row New York has been a tremendous partnership. Our program went from 12 students who did not row in the first year, to 40 students in our fifth year, who are competing at the State Championships.
