Winter racing, podcasting and touring campuses

Hello Row New York Friend,

The water season is around the corner, and we’re excited about the fresh air, sunshine, and the feeling of flying during a perfectly balanced recovery. The water has been hard-earned; over the winter our athletes juggled school, practice, swim tests, races, SAT prep, college visits, and professional development events. They built their strength and stamina and broke countless personal records.

Meanwhile, our Adaptive and Veteran teams visited Alexandria, Virginia for the Mid-Atlantic Erg Sprints. See photos from the weekend on Facebook.

Racing continues with our Brooklyn scrimmage this Saturday. Cheer us on and watch our live stream on Instagram @rownewyork starting at 1pm. We also hope to see you at the United Airlines NYC Half Marathon on March 17. A dedicated team, including a Row New York staff member and Brooklyn student-athlete, will be running to benefit our programs! Support their efforts by donating today.

BRINGING HOME HAMMERS

Every year, the CRASH-B’s World Indoor Rowing Championships hosts hundreds of rowers from around the world. On February 17th, Row New York’s Adaptive and Veteran teams traveled to Boston to compete with them. For para-athletes, CRASH-B’s was one of the first indoor races to align to the on-the-water para standard distance of 2,000 meters. Several Row New York para-athletes raced 2,000m for the very first time. Katherine Valdez and William Alvarez brought home hammers. In the video above, watch the entire arena chant for Lorin until she finished her first 2k. You can read more about Lorin’s race and see the race results on our blog.

WELCOME TO STRONG ISLAND

Row New York’s youth teams compete at Strong Island SprintsStrong Island Sprints is the culminating race of the winter for Row New York’s youth teams. Jane, our Queens Middle School Program Coordinator, captured the day: “It is not easy to get up at the crack of dawn, go to a brand new place, to do something you know is going to hurt, in front of a lot of people, AND keep focused on your goals, but you all did that. Today you showed tremendous courage, mental strength, and sportsmanship, and that is even more important than all the PRs—-which were also very impressive”.

WATERSIDE CHATS

Row New Yorkers talk about diversity and inclusionRow New York is officially podcasting! Waterside Chats are our informal conversations about inclusive and competitive rowing. The latest episode features Arshay Cooper alongside Row New York alumni and staff in a conversation about diversity in the sport of rowing. They share their stories of being young rowers of color and seek to answer an important question: How can we all help to diversify our sport? Subscribe to our podcast on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, Google Play, and Android. Email Joanne at jvictorio@rownewyork.org to join our live monthly talks.

CAMPUS VISITS

Row New York student-athletes experience college first-hand

University tours are a crucial part of the college admissions process. Campus visits allow students to realize their preferences, experience campus life first-hand, and the opportunity to ask current students questions. Recently our student-athletes visited Columbia University, Queens College, Union College, and John Jay College of Criminal Justice.
