Who We Are

Row New York is a unique sports-based non-profit organization founded on the premise that the discipline and teamwork that rowing instills, when combined with rigorous academic and social-emotional support, has the power to change lives. Our Youth Program serves 175 middle and high school student-athletes from diverse cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds. It is a year-round rowing and academic program with a goal of ensuring that 100% of our young people graduate high school and are successful in college or an alternative post secondary plan. In addition, we offer rowing to New Yorkers of all ages who are either people with physical or cognitive disabilities, military veterans, or local community members. Lastly, Row New York offers summer camps and a fee-for-service rowing program for New York City private high schools. Our programs are offered at two program sites: Upper Manhattan and Flushing Meadows Corona Park (Queens).

Position Summary

Row New York’s Vice President of Rowing is a unique leadership opportunity for someone with a passion for rowing and engaging participants from all backgrounds in reaching their potential as rowers and people. This is a senior leadership position that encompasses setting the vision for rowing, growing the capacity of the coaching staff, managing the administration of the rowing programs, and collaborating with the other members of the leadership team. The Vice President of Rowing leads a large rowing and facilities/boathouse operations team which consists of 7 full-time and multiple part-time staff members. Candidates should have strong experience as a rowing coach as well as outstanding management, leadership and organizational skills. They should be interested in and able to grow our rowing programs not just in size, quality, and competitiveness, but also with innovation and connection to community.

Key Outcomes

  • Support the coaching and management/leadership expertise of three direct reports (two Head Coaches and a Facilities/Operations Manager), especially their ability to oversee and develop their full and part-time staff
  • Ensure the development and codification of Row New York’s rowing methodology and operations and ensure they are integrated into the participant and coach experience
  • Build and sustain successful relationships with external partners including, but not limited to, area schools, rowing clubs, and partners for community rowing programs
  • Increase the overall visibility of Row New York and its programs and interact with donors and supporters as needed
  • Manage the administration and logistics of the rowing programs

Qualifications

  • At least four years’ experience rowing competitively
  • Significant experience coaching rowing (preferably U19)
  • Exceptional management and leadership experience supervising and developing staff (at least five years’ experience managing teams of multiple full-time staff)
  • A deep understanding of positive youth development principles
  • Cultural competence and ability to be an active agent in the organization’s work to provide a diverse, inclusive, and equitable experience for all youth and staff

Row New York requires all staff to have received the 2023-2024 COVID-19 vaccine, except as required by law.

Salary

$95,000-$115,000

Additional Context to the Position

The Vice President of Rowing reports directly to the Executive Director and engages in collaborative partnership with a senior leader representing academics, social work, and college success programming. The VP has input in decisions impacting the overall strategy and vision of the organization.
