Row New York seniors are wasting no time during the days and weeks until the official start of college application season. This summer some of our students, eight seniors and four juniors, are building test-taking muscle with Let’s Get Ready, a nonprofit organization that provides low-income students with free test preparation, counseling and other support services.

Through Row New York’s partnership with Let’s Get Ready, RNY participants take SAT prep courses two nights per week at Queens College or City College. The eight-week program places students in small math and reading classes, which are led by college coaches.

“The tutors are very dedicated to helping us learn and grow,” said RNY Senior Anthea Daley. Fellow Senior Juan Graciano said the tutors “do really well at helping you tackle the questions and teaching you how to answer them.”

This summer’s SAT Prep cohort are refreshing their math and verbal skills for the standardized exam, which many colleges require along with a completed application. It’s no easy task and that’s why students are getting a jump on test prep as early as junior year.

“This test has so much to do with preparation and practice and that is something that the program provides. You’re exposed to the material so when you take the actual test you won’t feel like you don’t know what you’re doing,” said RNY Junior Antonio Lopez.

College application season is all about making the experience your own. Senior Jhysnnique Moon said she’d advise kids who are thinking about taking on the opportunity to give it a shot. “When they take the PSAT or the actual SAT and they see a grade they aren’t so happy with, I’d tell them how much fun and how easy SAT prep is and how it actually helps you improve.”

Gislaine Garcia, Class of 2016, said “SAT prep is a bit challenging and ignites a flame of knowledge, which I hadn’t known was there.”
