We all know of Google, but few of us have had the chance to get a behind-the-scenes view of their offices like some of our students did on Wednesday, July 16! Many of our varsity rowers and a few staff members visited the Google offices here in NYC and had a great time.

We got to see some cool technology, such as a fascinating multiple-screen Google Earth display where we saw our boathouses from above. We were told to look out for Smart Watches from Google soon!

Everyone was very welcoming at Google and treated us to some tasty food in their  cafeteria. The students saw the well-stocked gameroom and played pool, foosball, and Pacman while also taking a little time to relax in massage chairs.

Michael Selberg and former rowers at Google talked with our kids about the hiring process for Google, shared their experiences of rowing in college, and why rowing is a great asset to firms like Google: teamwork, discipline, leadership and dealing with criticism in a constructive way without taking it personally.

The kids had lots of very good questions, including “Who gets to ride the office scooters?”, and our hosts provided great answers!  (Anyone can ride the scooters, even Nick – pictured below).

This trip was made possible thanks to Michael, a member of our Young Executives Board, former Cornell rower, and veteran of the Jingle Mingle and Harlem River Classic. We also saw Erin Rosenbaum, who helped plan our Rooftop Ruckus last year and was a coxswain at Princeton. There were a few other rowers at the Google offices–Rob who rowed for Stony Brook, Karen who rowed for MIT, and Alec, a current rower at Brown.

Thank you to everyone at Google; it was a wonderful experience!
