On Saturday, July 26, Row New York showed up to the 2014 Philadelphia Youth Regatta in full force! About 68 of our student-athletes competed in the regatta, and many of them were in multiple races. It was a lot of work, but as always with RNY, there was also a lot of excitement and learning.
We left on Friday afternoon in a small fleet of vans. The trip down was fun despite some traffic in New Jersey. By the time we checked into our hotel the kids were excited to start the next day, which we did at around 6 a.m.
There was plenty of time for food and some relaxing after we reached the site of the regatta, but there was also a lot of boat preparation to be done. RNY’s coaches, volunteers and student-athletes put their skills to use, and had a good time throughout the process.
Then the races began! And soon after, so did the rain; however, it let up as the races continued, and our rowers barely even complained about it. They’ve learned by now that unless it’s dangerous out on the water, the races will go on!
Our Queens girls took bronze early in the day during the “Girls Under 14 Eight” race. We had a lot of good rows and our student-athletes learned a lot about regattas and racing. It was some of our middle schoolers’ first time competing in a regatta. For a full list of RNY’s results, visit Row2k or at the Philadelphia Youth Regatta page.
In the end, it was a long, productive, and exciting day. Lots of work, but also lots of laughs. And, as you can see below, smiles all around!
