Over the past few months, Row New York teamed up with Groundswell Community Mural Project and Catskill Watershed Corporation to design and create a series of mural banners inspired by Row New York’s three locations–our World’s Fair Boathouse in Flushing-Meadows Corona Park, Queens, the Peter Jay Sharp Boathouse in upper Manhattan, and our main office and academic spaces in Long Island City, Queens. Groundswell is an organization that seeks to make change in communities through art. Their mission is to bring together artists, youth, and community organizations to use art as a tool for social change for a more just and equitable world. Their projects beautify neighborhoods, engage youth in societal and personal transformation, and give expression to ideas and perspectives that are underrepresented in the public dialogue.

Over many months, a group of talented Groundswell student-artists dedicated their time and artistic energy to creating murals that uniquely embody each RNY program location and its surroundings. We’re proud to announce their completion, and celebrated last Saturday with a dedication ceremony at the World’s Fair boathouse.

During the ceremony, Row New York and Groundswell staff and students spoke about their appreciation of, and pride in, the murals. RNY Deputy Director Jennie Trayes said, “We couldn’t stop smiling when we unveiled the murals at our office; they’re beautiful! And every time we look, we notice another detail.” Each mural will be placed in its respective location, and will serve as a reminder to the dedication and talent of Groundswell artists and our gratitude. Groundswell Deputy Director Sharon Polli recognized the cohesiveness of our partnership, and Groundswell lead artist Angel Garcia described the care and detail put into the work by their student-artists.
