On Saturday October 12th, Row New York varsity athletes from Queens and Manhattan and Row New York’s Masters crew traveled to Lyndhurst, New Jersey to race at the Head of the Passaic. It was a beautiful day on the water, with great weather and river conditions. We were glad to see many parents attending to cheer our athletes on! Row New York Manhattan and Queens varsity crews had a strong turnout, with 40 and 32 rowers, respectively. For many of the athletes, this was their first head race and it provided a good starting point for the fall season.

The Manhattan girls’ 1st varsity 8+ had a fantastic performance, winning their race and placing 1st out of 12 crews with a 10 second lead over the competition. They executed their race plan well, and coxswain Rachel Livermore steered a great course. The girls’ 2nd varsity 8+ had a notable performance, placing 7th out of 12 teams and beating every other 2nd Varsity 8+ out on the water. Many of these girls were new to the varsity crew and wholeheartedly took on the challenge of this new experience.

The Queens varsity girls had five total entries, with a lightweight quad, two varsity fours and two varsity eights. The lightweight quad led off the day, braving competition in an open weight event. Despite that, they were happy to see what the competition brought!

The two eights launched late morning for their race, walking on some crews, ready to improve in the next few weeks before our next regatta! Our fours were the last race of the day for the Queens girls and both boats were happy with the results. One finished a solid 9th out of 19 boats while the other fought through the race, managing to beat a boat despite a popped out rigger!

The Manhattan boys’ 1st varsity 8+ placed 6th out of 16, which was a good starting point for the coming fall races. They overcame some challenging practices and last minute boat changes in the week leading up to the race, so it was great that they were still able to step up and have a good race.

The Manhattan boys 2nd varsity 8+ finished 13th out of 16, and while the result was not what the athletes wanted, there were a lot of great takeaways from their race. All but two athletes in the lineup were new members of the varsity team, getting their first head race in, so it was a big learning experience for the boat. Oliver O’Reilly-Hyland also did a great job in stroke seat, and they are looking to improve upon the result in the coming races.

Our masters’ crew had fantastic performances across the board. The masters’ men’s 2x came in 1st out of 6 and won by a 24 second margin. Following suit, the mixed masters’ 4+ delivered a solid performance, winning the race by a wide margin. The men’s 2x looks to continue their heat streak at the Head of the Charles this weekend, while the rest of the masters continue training for the Head of Schuylkill in two weekends.

Our crews were happy at the end of the day to see where they are, how far they have come and where they need to go to get better, faster and stronger.

Big thanks to all the parents for helping out, bringing food, taking pictures, and showing your support. And thank you to Row 2K for the stunning racing pictures!
